Travel Counsellors warn: “Don’t fall victim to travel scams”

Following the Australian Government’s deregulation of the travel industry and abolishment of the Travel Compensation Fund last year, consumers are more at risk than ever before when losing money when booking travel.

The deregulation has resulted in some unscrupulous and inexperienced operators taking advantage of travellers by taking their money for travel bookings and then not providing the holiday promised, or any compensation or refund when things go wrong.

So to avoid the scams and disappointment of seeing their dream holiday disappear, mobile travel company, Travel Counsellors, is advising Australians to book their travel with a reputable agent and one that offers full financial protection to clients.

“Unfortunately many consumers aren’t aware of the importance of booking with reputable travel companies that offer full financial protection,” said Travel Counsellors Australia General Manger, Tracy Parkinson.

“Travel Counsellors implemented a comprehensive protection scheme immediately after the government scrapped the Travel Compensation Fund in 2014. This protection scheme acts as a safeguard in the unfortunate case of a provider going bankrupt or needing to close for other reasons, which can sometimes result in holidaymakers losing thousands of hard earned dollars.

“All bookings made with Travel Counsellors are covered by full financial protection, meaning that our clients aren’t out of pocket in the case of a provider closing at short notice, so our clients can book with full confidence.”

The largest home-based travel company in the world, Travel Counsellors was founded in 1994 and currently has 1,350 consultants who work from home with the support of over 250 staff at the company’s UK headquarters and offices in Australia, UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, South Africa, UAE, Belgium and Canada.

Here in Australia, the company’s is accredited with ATAS and has over 120 Travel Counsellors across the country.
