Latest research shows that while most Aussies think travelling sustainably is important, it’s not a primary consideration when booking a trip.

More than a third (34%) also claim to be tired of hearing about climate change, indicating a sense of weariness might be setting in around sustainable travel choices.

The findings come from the annual Sustainable Travel Report 2024 by Booking.com, with insights gathered from more than 1,000 Australians, exploring the latest consumer attitudes and priorities related to sustainable travel.

Key findings include:

# 77% of Aussie travellers say that sustainable travel is important to them.

# Some 54% admit that travelling more sustainably is important, but not a primary consideration when planning or booking a trip.

# Almost two thirds of Aussie travellers (67%) feel that witnessing sustainable practices during their travels inspires them to be more sustainable in their everyday life.

# 34% report they are tired of hearing about climate change all the time.

# Nearly a third (30%) believe that being more sustainable in a destination that is not implementing sustainability practices itself feels pointless, contributing to the sense of powerlessness

# Some 47% believe governments hold the most potential for countering economic impacts of travel, and 40% thinking travel service providers hold the key to counteracting the environmental factors.

“While many Australian travellers have retained a sense of optimism and a desire to have a more positive impact, there is a critical opportunity for the industry to accelerate efforts to make those choices easier for everyone,” said Todd Lacey, Regional Manager of Booking.com in Oceania.

Reassuringly, 64% of Aussie travellers say that they want to travel more sustainably over the next 12 months.

When it comes to motivators among those who want to travel more sustainably, 34% would feel guilty when they make less sustainable travel choices and 42% want to do so because they believe it’s the right thing to do.

“We’re thrilled to see the majority of Aussie travellers want to travel more sustainably this year, helping reduce their impact on the environment and local communities.”
