Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, yesterday successfully wrapped up its complimentary beach clean-up series as part of Norwegian Spirit’s local season, with its first ever shore excursion at Wailoaloa Beach in Fiji. Held in conjunction with NCL partner organisation and not-for-profit Take 3 for the Sea and supported by Tourism Fiji, over 84 participants including 64 Norwegian Spirit guests and crew, the Tourism Fiji team and local industry, collected a staggering 514 kilograms (kg) of rubbish.

Offered as a complimentary shore excursion to guests, participants rolled up their sleeves to collect litter and learn about the impact of plastic pollution on oceans and wildlife, under the guidance of an expert from Take 3 for the Sea.

Among the rubbish collected was 180kg of tyres, large glass bottles, 447 plastic bottles, 242 aluminum cans, 47 shoes and 851 pieces of plastic. The haul also included a pool pump, building materials and 157 pieces of polystyrene.

The event follows last month’s beach clean-ups at Cocora Beach in Eden and Brighton Beach in Melbourne.
