JUNE 2023 ISSUE

Meet DAVID JANZ, General Manager – Sales and Marketing, Daydream Island Resort.

Q: What was your first ever job and what did you learn from it that you still use today?

A: Working at a pool shop, I’m not sure what my title was but it was my role to fill up pool chlorine bottles for the pool owners who would come in on a weekly basis to have their pH levels tested.

What did I learn that I still use… mmm… it’s a good question but it did teach me that every position no matter the job title is important to the business achieving its goals.

Even though I was being paid $4.50 an hour and my clothes were constantly stained, I knew without my chlorine the customers would not have been able to use their pools so I was proud of what I did.

Q: What’s the first thing you do when you start a new position?

A: Number one priority is coffee and where can I get it fast.

Q: What advice would you give someone wanting to start a career in travel now?

A: The most exciting thing is also sometimes the most scary. No two days are ever the same.

You are constantly meeting new people, new markets and what works this year might not work next week but there is one thing that never changes, whatever you are selling or providing we are doing it to make people happy and have a positive experience they will remember and hopefully share with others.

Q: What has the pandemic taught you about yourself?

A: It is ok to be vulnerable and to ask for help, you don’t need to have all the answers to the world’s problems.

Q: Aisle or window seat and why?

A: Aisle seat, I have long legs so like to stretch…

Q: What’s the first thing you do when you get into the office?

A: Coffee and music. Need to start the day right.

Q: What are some of your favourite spots around the world?

A: Tirol in Austria. It was one of the first places my wife and I had a holiday together, first time I saw real snow (albeit on the side of the road and mixed with a fair amount of mud) and it was also the first time I heard cow bells in the mountains.

I also love Noosa. With a young daughter it’s the perfect family getaway, everything is just easy there and of course Daydream Island, a paradise in Queensland’s beautiful Whitsundays.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about working at Daydream Island?

A: Sharing the story far and wide of just what Daydream Island has to offer.

From the 200m long living reef which is an absolute jewel that needs to be protected, to the perfect sunsets, to it being just perfect for a Whitsundays getaway or large-scale incentive trip. The island has so much to offer.
